Once there was a little green frog who lived inside an old well. Cool mossy walls, a sliver of water — that was his whole world. Looking up at the round patch of sky, he'd think, “That must be the whole sky!”
All day he'd puff his throat and call — ribbit, ribbit! “This well is my kingdom! There's no finer place anywhere!” When a fly buzzed past — snap! — his tongue caught it. Ahh, what a life!
One day — splash! — another frog tumbled into the well. Wet and tired. “Where've you come from, brother?” “From the sea, far away. Such enormous water — look any way you like, there's no end to it!”
The well-frog laughed and laughed. “Bigger than my well? Impossible! Is there water that big anywhere?” The sea-frog said calmly — “Don't believe me? Then see for yourself. Come, let's climb up.”
Curiosity got the better of him. Up the slippery, mossy wall the two friends climbed. One hop… another hop… paws slipping, but never stopping. Slowly… slowly… they pushed on toward the light above.
At the well's edge, the frog froze. Before him — oh my! — a whole world. Green fields, a winding river, and far away the boundless sea, shimmering in the sun. “So… so big!” He couldn't find another word.
The sun was setting beyond the huge wide world. The well-frog sat quiet, then laughed at himself — “I thought my little well was the whole world! I really was just a frog in a well. Now I see — the world is far bigger than I dreamed.”
