The tallest in the forest was Meghla the giraffe. Her neck was so long her head nearly brushed the clouds — rustling the leaves of the highest branches! But Meghla felt a little shy — everyone was short, so why was only she so different? So she'd lower her neck and try to look small.
One day Raju the lion king saw Meghla and burst out laughing — “What kind of neck is that! A ladder? You can't run with it, you can't roar with it!” Everyone nearby giggled along. Meghla's neck drooped, and a tear trembled in her eye.
Then came a terrible drought. The sun blazed… the earth cracked… the pond dried to dust, the canal bed split open. Everyone fidgeted with thirst. Raju roared — “I want water! Water, right now!” But can a roar bring water?
Then Meghla lifted her long neck high — higher, higher than the banyan tree! Far away, beyond the hills, something shimmered — water! The very neck everyone had laughed at was the first to find it. Meghla called out — “Everyone, come! There's water that way!”
Meghla led the way, everyone in a line behind her. A little baby hare grew tired of walking — so Meghla lowered her neck and lifted him onto her back. Soon — a big, glittering pond! Everyone splished and splashed and drank their fill. Such joy!
Evening fell. As everyone rested by the brimming pond, Raju came slowly up to Meghla. Head low, voice soft. “I laughed at your neck, Meghla… and yet that very neck saved us all today. Please forgive me.”
Meghla smiled sweetly — “I forgave you long ago, Raju. Come — from now on, let's be friends.” From that day the whole forest understood — some are short, some tall, some run fast, some see far. Each one has a gift of their own. And the one you laugh at today may be the one who saves you tomorrow.
