The biggest, strongest dinosaur in the forest was Gurum. When he walked, the ground shook — thud! thud! But one day a flock of winged dinosaurs glided right over his head. Gurum stopped still, his two tiny arms drooping. “Oh, if only I could fly like that!”
High on a mountain peak sat little Udukku, all alone. He whooshed across the whole sky and saw the entire valley — yet, being so very small, no one ever noticed him. Looking down at the giant Gurum, Udukku sighed. “Oh, if only I were that big and that strong!”
One day Udukku swooped down right in front of Gurum. “Will you give me those two wings of yours, brother?” said Gurum. “Just once I'd love to touch the sky!” Udukku laughed, “Then give me that strength of yours — so no one ever pushes me around again!” They both laughed, and both felt a little sad.
Suddenly a flood came! The canal swelled and gurgled, water everywhere you looked. Stranded on a rock in the middle were the little dino babies. Udukku flew close — “I can't lift them, I'm far too small!” Gurum froze at the water's edge — “I'm strong, but I just can't reach that far!”
Then it struck them both at once! Udukku rose up high, spotted the safe path, and called out — “This way, this way!” And Gurum plunged into the water with a splash — one foot… another foot… pushing through the current, he stretched his huge body like a bridge, all the way to the rock!
Tap, tap, the babies crossed over Gurum's back, while Udukku flew about giving them courage. The moment they reached the bank, everyone leaped for joy! Gurum's big body, Udukku's little wings — the very things they'd been so glum about had saved them all today.
At dusk, Udukku came and perched on the tip of Gurum's nose. Gurum smiled, “This big body of mine is the greatest gift of all!” “And these little wings of mine too!” said Udukku. So tell me — isn't being exactly who you are the most beautiful thing of all?
