এক বনে থাকত এক খরগোশ। সে দৌড়াত হাওয়ার বেগে। আর সারাদিন সবাইকে শোনাত — “আমার মতো জোরে কেউ দৌড়াতে পারে না! কেউ না!”
In a forest lived a hare who ran as fast as the wind. All day long he boasted — “No one can run as fast as me! No one!”
একদিন এক কচ্ছপ ধীরে ধীরে এসে বলল — “চলো, দৌড় প্রতিযোগিতা হোক।” খরগোশ হেসে গড়িয়ে পড়ল। “তুমি? আমার সাথে? হা হা হা!”
One day a tortoise slowly walked up and said — “Let us have a race.” The hare rolled over laughing. “You? Against me? Ha ha ha!”
শেয়াল হলো বিচারক। “এক… দুই… তিন!” — দৌড় শুরু! খরগোশ ছুটল বিদ্যুতের মতো। কচ্ছপ চলল ধীরে… ধীরে… এক পা… আরেক পা…
The fox was the judge. “One… two… three!” — the race began! The hare shot off like lightning. The tortoise moved slowly… slowly… one step… then another…
অনেক দূর এগিয়ে খরগোশ পিছনে তাকাল। কচ্ছপ তো দেখাই যায় না! “একটু ঘুমিয়ে নিই,” ভাবল সে। “উঠে দৌড়ালেও আমিই জিতব।” গাছের ছায়ায় সে ঘুমিয়ে পড়ল।
Far ahead, the hare looked back. The tortoise was nowhere in sight! “I'll take a little nap,” he thought. “Even if I wake up late, I'll still win.” And under a shady tree, he fell asleep.
কচ্ছপ থামল না। রোদ উঠল — সে চলল। পথ কঠিন হলো — সে চলল। ক্লান্ত পা টেনে টেনে, এক পা… আরেক পা… ঘুমন্ত খরগোশকে পেরিয়ে সে এগিয়ে গেল।
The tortoise did not stop. The sun blazed — he kept walking. The road grew hard — he kept walking. Dragging his tired feet, one step… another step… he passed the sleeping hare and moved on.
হঠাৎ খরগোশের ঘুম ভাঙল। সে দৌড়াল প্রাণপণে — কিন্তু দেরি হয়ে গেছে! কচ্ছপ শেষ রেখা ছুঁয়ে ফেলেছে! সারা বন আনন্দে ফেটে পড়ল — “কচ্ছপ জিতেছে! কচ্ছপ জিতেছে!”
Suddenly the hare woke up. He ran with all his might — but it was too late! The tortoise had crossed the finish line! The whole forest erupted with joy — “The tortoise has won! The tortoise has won!”
খরগোশ মাথা নিচু করে বলল — “আমি ভুল করেছি।” কচ্ছপ হেসে বলল — “ধীরে চলেছি, কিন্তু থামিনি।” মনে রেখো — ধীরে ধীরে এগোলেও, লেগে থাকলেই জেতা যায়।
The hare lowered his head — “I was wrong.” The tortoise smiled — “I walked slowly, but I never stopped.” Remember — slow and steady wins the race.
