Stories from India

From the Himalayan peaks to deep jungles — India, right next door, is the birthplace of the Panchatantra and Jataka tales.

8 stories

Right next door to Bangladesh lies the huge land of India — the icy Himalaya touching the sky in the north, thick jungles and wide rivers in between, monkeys leaping through the trees and peacocks calling.

Around two thousand years ago, wise teachers here made up the Panchatantra tales to teach a king's sons — clever stories of jackals, crocodiles and monkeys. The Jataka tales are older still. Generations of children have grown up hearing them in the shade of banyan trees!

Fun facts

The Himalaya holds the tallest peaks on Earth — so tall that even the clouds sit below their tops!

In India's forests, elephants roam in herds — and the oldest grandmother elephant leads the way!

A single banyan tree can grow so wide that from far away it looks like a whole forest!

Panchatantra means "five books of wisdom" — the tales were made up to teach three young princes to think!
