Stories from Bangladesh

Rivers, paddy fields and the Sundarbans — our very own Bangladesh. Home of Thakurmar Jhuli's tales, and the soil Phulpakhi's new stories grow from.

11 stories

This is our very own land — Bangladesh, the land of rivers and green. Everywhere you look there are paddy fields, winding rivers, boats with wide sails, and the patter of monsoon rain when the season comes.

For ages, grandmothers here have told stories by lamplight in the evening — princesses from Thakurmar Jhuli, the clever tailorbird from Tuntunir Boi. Phulpakhi's own new tales grow from this same soil — these fields, these rivers, these forests.

Fun facts

The Sundarbans is the world's biggest mangrove forest — and it's the home of the Royal Bengal Tiger!

More than seven hundred rivers wind through Bangladesh — that's why it's called the land of rivers.

The doyel (magpie-robin) is our national bird, and the white water lily blooming on the ponds is our national flower.

When the rice ripens in harvest season, the fields shimmer like gold — that's why the song calls it "Golden Bengal".
